Data Analysis and Modeling of Turbulent Flows

We focus on the dynamics of non-reacting and reacting flows on both fundamental and applied configurations. Our aim is to understand the physics of unstable fluid dynamical problems, which represent a bottleneck in modern energy generating systems such as gas turbines, wind turbines or rocket engines. Our research is based on high-fidelity numerical simulations and well-equipped experiments. Based on the acquired data set, we derive models that break down the essential physics by theoretical and/or purely data-driven approaches.
News of the group
Congratulations to Mario and Vikas, who presented their PhD work during the 39th International Symposium on Combustion in Vancouver/Canada. This is the most prestegious conference in our research field: only 35% of the submitted papers are accepted after a peer-review process. Marios and Vikas' papers are accepted for the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute  and will appear soon.
Abdulla was invited by Frau Dr. Sonja Schmelter from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) to present the current work of the DMF group with the title "Machine Leaning meets High-fidelity numerical combustion simulations".
The first conference in person after the pandemic situation for us, where Abdulla presented his work in collaboration with Dr. Alp Albayrak. The paper entitled "From Pressure Time Series Data to Flame Transfer Functions: A Framework for Perfectly-premixed Swirling Flames" was well received by our colleagues and is accepted for the Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power.
Within the HYBURN workshop organized by Isaac Boxx, Abdulla presented the collaborative work entitled "Pressure time series – A valuable data set for flame dynamics modeling".
The DMF group hosted 13 participants of the Girl’s Day 2022 at TU Berlin . Within our workshop ‚Clean Energy Generation‘, we discussed problems in energy generation and the link to combustion science. Additionally, we prepared around 10 experiments with candle flames, with which the participants could learn ‚hands-on‘ about flammability limits, emissions, ignition etc. We enjoyed the questions, the discussions and their curiosity about this topic and hope to have sparked some deep interest in this field.
The papers of Mario and Vikas got accepted for the 39th International Symposium on Combustion ! We are looking forward to seeing our colleagues and friends in Vancouver !
Abdulla presented the plenary talk on "Machine Learning in Chemically Reacting Flows: Trends and Perspectives" in Heidelberg. Thanks to Prof. Eva Gutheil for the invitation and the organisation of this event.

Our paper "From Pressure Time Series Data to Flame Transfer Functions: A Framework for Perfectly-premixed Swirling Flames" was accepted for the ASME Turbo Expo Conference 2022 in Rotterdam.
Abdulla presented at the 30. Deutscher Flammentag (online meeting) and chaired the "Combustion in Gas Turbine" session.
Mario and Vikas presented their papers on the "SoTiC 2021 – Symposium on Thermoacoustics in Combustion: Industry meets Academia" conference.
Our latest paper with the title "An exceptional point switches stability of a thermoacoustic experiment" is accepted for publication in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
